Our Farm was established in 2013 in Springvale, Maine, by Laura Young and Aron Gonsalves, who spent their twenties on the sunny island of Oahu, where they pursued their culinary careers. They then opened a hydroponic/aquaponic garden supply store learning about small-scale urban farming and working with the Department of Education to establish gardens for local schools. After 10 years, they were ready to take on the challenge of a homestead. Their search for land brought them to Maine. Laura and Aron settled on the 40+ acres of the former Shaw’s Dairy Farm, where they raise livestock and sell free-range chicken, pastured pork, and grass-fed beef. In the fertile soil of Hanson Ridge they grow seasonal vegetables, herbs, and flowers, sold at farmers’ markets, to local restaurants, and right off their roadside stand. Tomatoes, squashes, cabbages, and peppers start life as seedlings in the little hoop house; carrots, cucumbers, radishes, and beets are sown directly into soil fortified with compost produced right on the farm. Used substrate from the nearby organic mushroom farm, Mousam Valley Mushrooms – where Aron is an owner and chief operation officer – is used to mulch and augment the gardens at Our Farm.
